Salute! Inhumate has a background with
Grind Your Soul. How is this history?
|
Fred: Hello ! Yes, Grind Your Soul is
an association we’ve created to have
an official status for the band. With this
we can have a bank account for the band in
France and it has also the role of our own
label. Grind Your Soul is also a distro and
the headquarter of the Soul Grinding Festival.
And all those activities are run by INHUMATE
members. So, we called this association Grind
Your Soul, we could have named it INHUMATE…

TGZ:
Tell us a bit about each of your releases
till the most recent one, "Life". |
Fred: Our two first releases
were 2 demo tapes (before the coming of CDR),
“Abstract Suffering” in 1993 and
“Grind Your Soul” in 1995. After
that we released 4 CD until now. “Internal
Life” in 1996, “Ex-Pulsion”
in 1997, “Growth” in 2000 and
“Life” in 2004. During all that
time I think we improved our way of composing,
playing and also the sound. We always try
to give the best we can. Concerning strictly
the music I think we were playing death metal
in the beginning, then death / grind and now
we play grind / death… Many people consider
us as a grind core band, we I don’t
think we’re a grind core band, we still
have our roots in fucking death metal and
either if we go on playing simple riffs, we
don’t leave the metal scene, you know
we’re more metal than core…

Does “Life” bring a concept
theme? What is it about? |
Fred: Yes, “Life” brings
a concept, but not alone. I mean that all
our CD are united into a wide concept dealing
with Life and Time Abolition. This concept
is only focused on the CD titles and artwork,
of course some lyrics can be into the concept
but not all of them because we think that
it is bad for inspiration to have all lyrics
based on one concept only (just read lyrics
of Black Metal bands and you’ll understand
what I mean, after 2 tracks you get bored
of reading the same old shit…). So,
if you tale the list of our CD I did before,
the 1st one is dealing with the antenatal
life, the second one with the moment of birth
(expulsion means the exact moment when the
baby goes out in French…), the third
album is about the teen age years, when the
personality is creating and “Life”
is about the maturity years, maybe the moment
when the person is procreating because this
is the moment when life passes on. Our next
albums will be titled “The Fifth Season”
(time of wisdom), “Expulsed” (out
of life into death…) and “Eternal
Life” (life never ends, because the
child – flesh of my flesh – is
the owner of my life), and at that moment
the concept isn’t finished as INHUMATE
is eternal and the listener just have to listen
to the whole heptalogie (7 albums) again,
and again… Endlessly…

TGZ:
The album bring 3 videoclips filmed during
concerts, photos and lots of information.
Who had the idea of making the material so
unique? |
Fred: It was a common idea, because this
album is the middle part of the concept, we
wanted to make something really interesting,
that’s why we decided to enclose as
much things as possible (things you told but
also a 16 pages full colored booklet). And
it’s also very important for us because
we’re a self produced band, 100% underground
and DIY and we also wanted to show that underground
+ self production can mean quality!

Were all of your albuns released by Grind
Your Soul Distro? |
Fred: Yes, they were and all the following
ones will be released by Grind Your Soul too
for the reasons I explained before. We already
had some propositions from labels, but we
always refused them because we think they
were not interesting at all and that we were
able to do all by ourselves. Of course with
a big label promotion should more interesting,
but we don’t care, we don’t wanna
be rock stars, we just want to be honest underground
activists !!!

also had participation in split albuns and
underground compilations. Which ones? |
Fred: No, we didn’t release any
split albums, only a few split tapes and EP
with FUNERAL MARCH, DISEMBOWEL, TRAUMA TEAM,
MAGGOT SHOES, EXHUMATOR, SANGUINARY, DEPRAVED,
MUCUPURULENT, TRAUMATISM, BLOODSHED, PULMONARY
FIBROSIS, ALIENATION MENTAL, VAGINAL INCEST.
About the compilations, they have been several
dozens, so I can't name them all. But interested
people can see some samples on our website

. The cover arts are fucking extreme. Did
Jon Zig do all of them? Is he French? |
Fred: Jon Zig did only the “Life”
artwork. Now it’s strange that you never
heard about him, he did many artworks and
tattoos for a lot of death metal bands, he
is from the USA.

You have played in several countries
with bands like Agathocles, Cannibal Corpse,
Cryptosy, Immolation, Nile, Six Feet Under,
Unholy Grave, Vader etc... Which were the
best and worst places where you have performed? |
Fred: The worst was a bullshit
place in a French city called Lyon, uninteresting
show in front of less than 10 persons... And
the best one, it’s hard to say, but
I think that until now it’s our performance
at the Obscene Extreme Fest in czech Republic,
the show from where the video you can check
on “Life” has been taken of. This
festival is really the best festival of the
world for underground brutal musicians !!!
It’s totally obscene and fucking extreme
as well !!!

How is your relationship with the bands
that share stage with you? |
 Fred:
It really depends of the bands, because
I never consider myself as a rock star (hope
so ;-), and I always try to check all the
band that’s playing with us, and usually
many bands don’t have a look or don’t
give a fuck to the other playing bands and
I really don’t understand and don’t
appreciate this attitude. I hate selfishness
and not watching the other bands is a kind
of selfishness I think... So, in that case
the relationship is at minimum... Out of that
I try to talk with the guys if they’re
ok, you know, as underground band we always
have to look for good relationship with the
other bands ?, that’s important for
us but also for the whole underground scene,
solidarity should be everywhere in this small
scene !!!

And how has been the receptiveness of the
public to your concerts? Lost of insanity,
brotherhood, moshes, right? What about the
groupies on the backstage? (hahahahaha) |
Fred: Groupies ? Hum, no I don’t
think we have groupies, ah, ah, ah... Maybe
are we too much sick !!!! Now usually the
reception of the crowd is pretty good. Christophe
has a big charism and fronting people go
mad watching his eyes, and that’s
cool. We call that the stage trance !!!!

. What do you know about the Brazilian
metal scene? |
Fred: Oh... Many things... You have a
very important underground scene. During the
last decade I was in touch with dozens of
zine editors and bands... Maybe too much to
be sure to give the right names... But maybe
if I say BLACK HOLE, CVI, DECOMPOSED GODS,
HORROR BLAST, FLESH GRINDER, ROTTENNESS, PSYCHOSIS
DEATH, SUCCUBUS, MORBID TALES you will know
those names... We also played with FORNICATION
(very cool brutal death band) and SEPULTURA
(very bullshit thrash band nowadays ;-)...
Out of that I know you have some known bands
like KRISIUN and so on, but this doesn’t
interest me...

TGZ:
Tell us some curious event that happened. |
Fred: Hum, maybe the fact that one day
we drove more than 1500 kilometers, almost
lost a wheel of a car in the deepest Austrian
country side, all this to drive in fucking
small roads in Slovakia country side too...
And this to arrive after the gig... The most
hallucinating thing was that there a highway
and it wasn’t on our map, so we lost
more than 3 hours because of the fucked up
wheel and maybe more time on the road... And
when we reached the place the guys just let
us sleep: no food, nothing... Believe me that
the morning after we were not really happy,
but the evening after we played at a cool
open air in Vienna and then everything when
ok again :)

Which Grind bands would you point out?
What is your vision of the underground Grind
scene? |
Fred: I won’t point grind bands
but only one, the best band for the last 5
years in the whole underground: INGROWING
from Czech Republic. This band is absolutely
killer! If you don’t know it, just check
their last album “Sunrape” at
www.obscene.cz
and enjoy ultimate grind / death in its best
way !!!! Now the underground grind scene is
getting a bit narrow minded I think. But it’s
the same in all kinds of underground “metal”.
Grind freaks don’t deal too much with
death metal and it seems to be the same thing
in the other side... It’s a fucking
pity I think. Grind core, death metal, both
scenes are close I think, and I always try
to melt them, but what can I do , he, he...

Give us your opinion about: |
1 – Politics: INHUMATE
is an apolitic band, so I won’t give
any poilitical opinion here, just wanna say
that we need politics. And to all those who
think that politics is shit, then I say: go
to Iraq, it’s anarchy there ! Enjoy
your utopic philosophy there...

– Wars: The worst
side of human race...
3 – Society:
Human is made to live in a society, so can’t
criticize it. Of course some societies could
be better, but I don’t complain of the
one in which I live. And to all those stupid
dreaming european anarchists I say the same
things as above : If European societies are
bullshit, then go somewhere where things are
better. Where? Iraq maybe ????
4 – Abortion:
I think it’s a good thing, positive
women right ! I support !
5 – Mutilations:
??? No ideas...
6 – Terrorism:
The XXIst century war... No excuse
for terrorists, in jail for life...
