TGZ:
Hi Sakis! How were your live shows outside
Greece? |
Sakis: Hello to you as well my friend.
We actually gave only one show outside of
Greece. It was on Feb.1st and we played in
Sofia – Bulgaria supporting Orphaned
Land. I must say that it was a fantastic experience
as it was our first time playing abroad. Everything
was perfect… the organizers, the rest
of the bands, but most of all the people there.
They welcomed us the best way possible and
we thank them for that.
|
TGZ:
Tell me some things for the history and
line-up of W.E.B. Do you have any projects?
|

Sakis: W.E.B. were found in 2002, Athens,
Greece. We play music deeply influenced by
the "dark side" of Metal. It can
be defined as atmospheric metal mixed with
a variety of goth and black Metal along with
some heavy riffs, sensitive melodies and some
stroke of classical music. All these dressed
up with sorrowful and depressive erotic lyrics.
We’ve given numerous live performances
in Greece while two of the most important
ones would be the gig with Rotting Christ
on May the 16th of 2003 the appearance at
105,5FM May Day Rock Fest in Thessalonica
on May the 15th of 2004 and the gig in Sofia
of Bulgaria with Orphaned Land on February
1st 2005. Apart from the promo-CD that we
have released now, there are pieces of the
band's material in the compilation CD "Greece
Attacks - The Next Assault" out by Sound
& Vision Records on October of 2004 and
also on the split-EP with Sad Wings out by
Music Forward and Rock On Magazine on July
2004. We have just finished the recordings
of our debut full-length album, entitled "Don't
Wake Futility" and now the band is looking
forward for a deal with a record label to
release it. At the same time we are giving
as many live performances as possible.
The line up of the band is Darkface (aka me)
– Guitars/Vocals, Alexandros –
Drums/Keyboards, Anthony – Guitars &
Agis – Bass.
Answering the “projects” part
of your question, Alexandros has a Black Metal
project in which they play in the style of
Behemoth late Emperor, and I‘ve got
an industrial/ebm one with influences from
Wumpscut and Diary of Dreams.
|
TGZ:
Your produce of your recording is great!
Where do you record this work? |

Sakis: First of all thank you for your
kind words.
We recorded it at Fragile Sound Studios in
Athens of Greece.
It is engineered by Vangelis Yalamas (Fragile
Vastness) and produced by Vangelis Yalamas,
Alexandros and me.
I strongly believe that this studio expands
the capabilities of every musician that is
recording there under the guidance of Vangelis,
who is a great guy, musician and producer.
He really helped us a lot in the whole process.
|
TGZ:
I found your music very dark and…industrial!
How do you decide to follow this modern way
of expression? |
Sakis: I wouldn’t say that we “decided”
to follow this way of expression. It was something
that came naturally out of jamming through
the very early rehearsals of the band when
it was first formed. It is the musical way
that expressed us best and we love making
and playing this kind of music. It is as simple
as that. Let us not forget music is a form
of art and every artist expresses themselves
the way they find most natural and interesting
to do so.
|
TGZ:
Which are the bands that have you influenced
your musical mosaic…? |
Sakis: All of the band members carry
different influences and musical background
that take place in our music through our personal
filter as a band and as individuals. If we
need to put some names on the table I would
say that some of the bands that have influenced
us the most are Paradise Lost, Moonspell,
Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, Type O Negative,
Sentenced and the list goes on and on…
|
TGZ:
Who is the basic composer of your songs?
Can you make us one report about the lyrical
parts? |

Sakis: Most of our songs are composed
by me but each one of the rest of the band
has added their opinions and ideas inside
the compositions. Also most of the orchestra
parts, as well as the keys’ patterns
come out of Alex’s brain. Anthony was
the one to bring up the main idea for a couple
of songs as well. As for Agis he mostly deals
sometimes with ideas upon the orchestrations.
Concluding on this subject I would say that
we all kind of deal with the compositions
of our music in a way.
As for the lyrical parts they are my job apart
from the “Rust” song which is
written by Alexandros. Our lyrics are desperate,
erotic, sorrowful…. Sometimes they are
vampiric oriented and sometimes the mixture
of vodka and tequila just breathes through
words. I would prefer that if someone is interested
in our lyrics, they should better give their
own meaning to them.
|
TGZ:
Tell me some things for your cooperation with
Anathema? |
Sakis: First of all let me correct you.
We didn’t have cooperation with Anathema.
We had cooperation with their ex-bassist Duncan
Patterson (now playing in Antimatter). He
is a friend and one time he was listening
to our songs while we were in the preproduction
process and he liked them. So we invited him
to play the bass in one song called “Futility’s
Lullaby” and he accepted it. It was
a really nice cooperation and we shared many
beautiful moments with a beautiful person.
Truly a wonderful cooperation that makes us
both happy and proud.
|
TGZ:
I thing that you have make and one video
clip. How was this experience? |
Sakis: Yeah, we‘ve made a video
clip for the Cockroach song. We had fun on
the whole making-of process. Thankfully, we
didn’t set the studio, that the shooting
took place, on fire since we had some trouble
with some equipment there at that particular
day. Despite all that, the outcome came out
really satisfactory, we are pleased with the
result and we hope everyone enjoys it.
|
TGZ:
Do you believe that the Greek scene have
the bases for something more international? |

Sakis: The Greek metal scene has evolved
pretty much in the way the bands deal with
their music.
Today we have better bands on the underground
than ever before. The major disadvantage is
that there are not many chances of a good
live performance since there are not many
venues and people don’t attend such
event easily.
As for doing something more international
I believe that every band starts with equal
terms and what matters after that is how skilful
they are and what will be the chances they
will be lucky to get.
The Greek scene of our days, is in no way
inferior to the bands abroad but we don’t
get to have the same chances (contracts with
foreign labels for instance).
|
TGZ:
Which are your future plans? Do you have any
suggestions from labels?
|
Sakis: As I said on your 2nd question
we have already finished the recordings of
our debut full length album. It is going to
be entitled “Don’t Wake Futility”
and it will contain 10 songs plus one cover
song – if we finally get the rights
to include it. What I can tell you is that
for the time being we are preparing the release
of the album the best way possible and we
are giving as many live performances as we
can.

TGZ:
Ok Sakis! Thanks for the interview! Please
close this interview with some words about
Web ThunderGod Zine and the Brazilian scene… |

Sakis: Thank you as well !
For the Brazilian scene let me just say that
personally I am a huge fan of Sepultura (Max
period) and Soulfly and the same goes for
Angra and Shaman.
You guys have the reputation of a hell of
a crazy audience that rocks hard as well.
As for the ThunderGod webzine, W.E.B. supports
your effort to promote the global Metal scene.
Keep it up!
Fulfill your Dreams,
don’t wake futility....
...and stay Dark!!
